Axiality control for press components

The system we developed for controlling mutual disposition of the moving parts of press along the axe (axiality control) made it possible to increase the quality of the manufactured aluminium profiles and reduce the load on the press components.

problem

In the process of operation, axiality of press components may change. It may be caused by structural deformations with the course of time, high temperature stress or other factors. In the process of aluminium profile manufacturing, misaligned moving parts of press may cause defective products, uneven wear of the press components and/or damages to the pressing tool.

solution

We have developed an automated system for controlling mutual disposition of the moving parts of press — the container the preheated dies for profiles manufacturing are placed in and the plunger crosshead that plunges the stem to extrude the die through the matrix.

A camera and a light-emitting diode (LED) beacon are located on the front part of the plunger crosshead. Two LED beacons and a mirror with a lens are attached to a wall of the container. The camera captures the light emitted by two LED beacons and the light of its own LED beacon as reflection from the mirror. Than the system compares the mutual location of the captured light spots with the parameters that correspond to the full axiality of the controlled components.

By doing so the the measuring system checks the lateral misalignment and rotation of all the moving parts of press and thus controls axiality of the press.

The system automatically compares many parameters that determine the quality of the unit and the life time of the press equipment and does so in the real time. It is an alternative to the manual method of axiality control that is much more time and labor consuming.
